Fishing is not only good for catching dinner, but is also a good sport as well. However when catching fish for sport, it is most important to delicately catch and handle the fish to avoid damaging it. Furthermore when an individual is practicing catch and release, they may gently hold the fish and have themselves photographed with it as a trophy.

There are many different tips and techniques that one can practice to not only ensure they have a good time, but also to ensure that the fish they catch are able to live. It’s especially beneficial to practice catch and release on those more rare or larger fish as well.

Prepping for the Catch

In terms of preparing for a day of catch and release, there are a few things that one can prepare themselves with before hand. It’s ideal to use artificial baits as well as barbless fish hooks. The reason it’s important to use artificial bait is that it’s much easier to remove than real bait; additionally, live bait can also be hooked deeper in the fish’s gut than fake bait would be.

Barbless fish hooks are designed to catch the fish in a way that deal the least damage to it. A barbless hook is a simple fish hook that is designed to easily catch the fish on it’s lip. These types of fish hooks are also more easy to remove than compared to a fish hook with barbs. Optionally, the person may also use a heavy-duty set of pliers to bend the fish hook down even further.

The next thing to have ready is the appropriate fish netting if this is used. It’s important to use a rubber netting versus the traditional netting as this can hurt the fish and remove it’s protective barrier. Lastly, a heavy fish line and tackle are efficient for quickly reeling in and netting the fish as quickly as possible to reduce the possibility of damage.

The Catch

When the fish is caught, it should be quickly reeled in and netted in the water instead of the boat or on land. The fish hook should be promptly removed by carefully holding the fish with wet hands to avoid removing the fish’s protective layer. A trophy photograph may be taken and the fish can then be safely released.

Releasing the Catch

When releasing the fish, it should be carefully placed into a rubber net and put into the water in a low current. This will allow the fish to regain it’s consciousness and functionality to where it may then be carefully released.

Do barbless fish hooks work? The simple answer is yes. If you are a responsible catch and release fisherman, than this is the hook you should use.

A barbless hook is a circle hook without the barb. They do not go too far down into the fish’s mouth and make for a faster release. Thus resulting in less injuries to the fish, and kills less of them too. You will most likely be able to keep the fish in the water to release by backing out the hook.

This type of hook could easily become the fly fishermen’s new best friend. The barbless hook, when used with smaller ties, will help you achieve a better strike to hook ratio. The resistance that was created by the bard will no longer be an issue.

Some fishermen will argue that you will lose a lot of fish when using a barbless hook. You may have to adjust your fishing style, but you can catch as many fish with this type of hook as you would with a barb hook. When using a barbless hook, it is important to remember that you need to keep your line tight when bringing in your fish. Also you do not want to put split rings on your lures, but consider using a triple grip hook. Changing to these practices will help you catch a high volume of fish, without causing harm to the fish and also make you a better fisherman. They are also harmless to the fishermen.

You can easily change your barb hooks into barbless hooks. Take a pair of pliers and flatten the barb. Using a piece of sandpaper, you can further smooth the barb.

Many places within the United States and across the world require barbless hook fishing only. Catch and release fishing was introduced foremost for the protection of the fish. Non meat fishermen continue to use this practice for the sport of fishing. To continue to make sure that fish remain sustainable and to also continue the sport of fishing, it only makes sense that the barbless hooks are used. You will be a better fisherman for it and the fish will have a better life.

Brook Trout have a special type of protective slime layer that covers their entire body; this protective slime layer fights off diseases that might be present in the water. When catching trout, is it most important that they are released back into the water carefully to avoid removing the slime from their bodies as this could result in them dying.

Baits Hooks & Lures

If the person is planning on catch and release, they should opt to use barbless hooks or they may even use pliers to pinch the hooks down before they are used. This will help to prevent damage to the lips or throat of the trout. If the person is planning on catching to keep, but may end up releasing some trout, then they may use a pair of pliers to immediately remove the hooks from the fish once caught to help prevent any damage that might occur.

Methods of Catching

It’s very important not to reel the trout in too quickly; reeling the trout in too quickly can cause damage to the fish and remove it’s protective slime by dragging it on the ground. It’s best to use a rubber mesh net to catch the fish while still allowing it to sit in the water. This helps to prevent the protective slime from being wiped off by the fish flipping around in a boat or on the ground.

It’s also a good tip to handle the fish as less as possible; when the fish is caught, the bait hook or lure should be removed promptly to help decrease lip damage or other damage to the fish. This can be done by gently pulling the fish’s head out of the water and then cutting the hook line loose and removing the hook gently. It’s ideal to have the trout in a rubber mesh net in the water so that the fish is not swishing around as much while trying to remove the hook.

Releasing Methods

When releasing the trout, people should allow them to sit in a rubber mesh netting while gently introducing them back into the water where the current is gentle. If the fish is somewhat exhausted from the fight of being caught, it may be gently submerged into the water slightly to allow it to get accustomed to swimming off again. When the trout seems fine to be released, the net may be lowered so it may swim off. Following these tips will greatly help to reduce damage or injuries to Brook trout.

Another factor to consider is the way they fight when they are hooked. This makes catching the Atlantic salmon a big fight. Fly fishing is a way to catch this fish as they act very aggressively towards flies on entering the ocean. The reason may be that they have practice in chasing their prey. It is well-known among fishermen that an Atlantic salmon will rise, whatever height it is resting, to catch a fly.

1. Wet Flies – Most Atlantic salmons are caught using huge wet flies, size 5/0 to 12. Although size 4 and size 6 were the standard sizes, smaller sizes are being used. Large flies are effective in dirty, fast or high water but when water is clear and low, smaller sizes are preferred.

To effectively catch an Atlantic salmon, it should see the broadside of wet fly, especially when the fly is two feet under the surface.

The salmon will surely rise to take the fly.

The types of wet flies used to catch Atlantic salmon in spring and summer are

 Mickey Finn

 Ross Special

 Green Highlander

 Silver Doctor

 Buck Bugs

 Rat Series

 Green Machine

 Black Bear Series; and others

2. Dry Fly – When the water is warm, the Atlantic salmon rises to dry flies. It is not known why dry flies work well in summer. When the water temperature reaches 70 degrees and above, the salmon becomes inactive. During this time, it does not take flies. At such a time, using dry flies work.

A dry fly like the orange bomber can be used for the entire season. Other types of dry flies used are Ausable Wulff, Grizzly Kind, Riffle Grizzly, Paonne Seche, and Montana Wulff, among others.

The types of dry flies used for catching the Atlantic salmon are –

 Wulff Series – White and grey color;

 Cosseboom – size 2, 4, 6 and 8

 MacIntosh – size 2, 4, 6 and 8

3. Nymph Fishing – this is another method of fly fishing to catch the Atlantic salmon.

The natural prey of the Atlantic salmon is caddisflies, mayflies, blackflies, and stoneflies. Although the Atlantic salmon feeds on a larger prey when it becomes an adult, you can catch it with fly fishing.

When choosing the fly, remember the following rules –

 Choose dark flies for dark water and if the water is clear, choose bright flies.

 Use bright flies, if the day is bright, and dark flies, if the day is dark.

 Use large and colorful flies during Fall

 Use dry flies in warm water.

When the Atlantic salmon enters fresh water, it stops feeding. You have to use flies to catch it. Although numerous fly patterns are used to fish for the Atlantic salmon, the ones given above are the most successful.

The Salmo Salar is an incredible fish that will make a lightning fast run if hooked. They have been known to break water, jump vertically or even tail walk upon the surface of the water. The largest recorded Atlantic Salmon caught, was done so in a net off of Scotland, and its weight was 103 pounds. So, what are the best lures available to catch this fish?

One of the most popular lures among Atlantic Salmon fishermen is Luhr-Jensen’s Krocodile Spoons, a satisfied fisherman swears that in his one year of using the Krocodile, he caught more Atlantic Salmon than his previous five years of fishing without one. The Krocodile spoons are stamped and formed from solid brass, which is heavy but they offer ‘castability’ in return. They come in quite a few sizes and colors but what you can count on is their ability to attract the fisherman’s trophy fish…the Atlantic Salmon. Most fishermen do tend to use the lure during spring, when the Atlantic Salmon are typically in the rivers.

Another popular lure that fishermen use during the spring is the Little Cleo, which comes different colors and sizes. What the Little Cleo does is seduce the Atlantic Salmon by wiggling. The wiggling is a result of a unique humpback shape that all Little Cleo spoons possess, making this an effective lure. To that same effect, it should be mentioned that the #6 Rapala stick does the same by floating, letting the light bounce off of it, creating an alluring effect for the Atlantic Salmon. A fisherman caught himself a 20 incher using the #6 Rapala stick.

The Honey Bee Spoon is one of the most successful lures and preferred favorite by many Atlantic Salmon enthusiast. The Honey Bee lure is an attractive lure for the Atlantic Salmon and has helped many catch their most prized catches. The Honey Bee is known to be one of the best lures when fishing in late May, when the Salmo Salar has returned to broader lakes. Another appropriate lure used in broader waters is the Needlefish which is a top trolling performer, perhaps due to its added flipper tail which is even more attractive to the King of Gamefish. If you try one of these successful lures, you will surely catch your prized salmon.

The species of fish commonly known as brook trout originates from the salmon family and inhabits clear, pure, clean water found in most freshwater streams, lakes, rivers and brooks; adding to the origin of its name. However, there are a few interesting a lesser-known facts associated with the brook trout.

Brookies Love to Eat

Some interesting facts about brook trout include a healthy appetite with their form of diet varies as they grow into adulthood. Very young brook trout consume healthy levels of algae as well as initial stages of insect larvae. The more impressive diets occur as the fish matures and can include consumption of large crustaceans, salamanders and even small mammals. Equally as interesting, a brook trout that has reached adult maturity can and will eat anything that fits within the mouth cavity of the fish. When considering the average weight of an adult species is 1.5 pounds with a recorded weight as high as 14.5 pounds, the size of the brook trout’s meal can be quite impressive and rather surprising as well.

There are Saltwater Brookies

Within this particular family of fish are a rare strain known as “salters”. They receive this unique nickname due to their ability to enter seawater, while capable of sustaining salt-water duration’s spanning as much as three months in length. After temporarily inhabiting the high sodium waters of the ocean, these particularly hearty strains of fish return to the fresh water environment while displaying a rare adaptability characteristic. In addition to a multiple-adapting internal system, the scales of the brook trout change to resemble the environment they currently inhabit, making their scaly exterior a naturally functioning camouflage system. This is one of the facts about brook trout making them fun for fishing.

They Change Color During Spawning Season

Although they are characteristically colorful and distinctive, another of the interesting facts about male brook trout are the colors displayed during spawning season. Male side-markings can change to a golden brown, scarlet red, royal blue, emerald green and bright florescent orange. This change in color plays a significant role in spawning; the brighter colors change for attracting female brook trout. The brighter the color range, the more females are attracted.Brook trout vary slightly from each region they inhabit and make a great species for fishing. They are a hungry species and easy for catching in multiple quantities. Within their natural geographical regions, they are one of the popular families of fish in the sport today.

Although many areas that have the best brook trout fishing are fly fishing only, there is still plenty of waters where you can use spinning tackle and even live bait.

Remember that artificial lures and fly fishing only are two different things. If the water you fish in is artificial lures only and you had your heart set on live bait, fear not. You can still have a very productive day by using some of these spinning bait options.

Spinners

Spinners are lures that have a spinning element to them, usually a spoon. They most often have a treble hook hidden with some hair and the lure is decorated to mimic bait fish. If you are fishing in shallow or rocky water be sure to keep the lure off the bottom to avoid losing it.

Let your spinner downstream and then lock your line so the lure rises near the top of the water and sits there spinning away. This looks like a small fish trying to fight upstream and will bring trout out of hiding.

Plastic Worms

Worms and night crawlers are some of the best bait you can use. If that is not an option try the artificial version. Bounce the worm off the bottom of the river or lake and work it into cracks and crevices. Try different colors including bright orange and yellow. Although this is not very natural looking trout seem to be attracted to bright colors and will go out of their way to check them out.

Bait Fish Replica

Choose favorite brand of replica minnow or other bait fish like smelt and go to work. Try a floating version for trout because they will work best in rivers and will not get hung up as easy. Floating lures also work great for early season trolling when trout are patrolling the shores looking for bait fish.

They require clean cold water that is filled with oxygen. An abundance of predator fish such as pike or bass can be devastating to a brook trout population. Here is a list of some places that will give you the best shot at catching native brook trout.

Ontario Canada

Ontario is actually home of the world record brook trout. With its cold interior waters Ontario still has plenty of places to find native brook trout. In lakes, streams and brooks brookies can be found in their natural environment. The chances of landing a trout over five pounds in Ontario might be the best in the world. The best time to fish in Ontario is during a bright day when the weather has been good for several days.

Newfoundland/ Labrador

Labrador is like the paradise for brook trout anglers. Along with holding trout as big as Ontario you also can have the added bonus of fishing for sea fearing brook trout. There is no real advantage to sea fearing brookies except for the fact that they are rare and slightly exotic. The size of a brook trout doesn’t change much but the appearance does differ from landlocked brookies.

Like in Ontario there are plenty of Lakes that hold trout over 5 pounds and can even reach the 10 pound mark.

Maine United States

If you are talking about great brook trout fishing in the continental United States then you are most likely talking about the great state of Maine. Maine strives to maintain a strong brook trout population as well as re-populating its waters with raised trout. This is not an optimal situation but it is a necessity in order to put breeding trout back into Maine waters. Northern Maine is still remote enough to produce the clean water brook trout thrive in.
